Applied Nanotech Inc. Announces Two Additional Nanotechnology Products
Austin, Texas – July 23, 2002 – SI Diamond Technology (OTC BB: SIDT) today announced that its subsidiary, Applied Nanotech Inc. (ANI), has introduced two proprietary products based on nanotechnology- carbon nanotube gated electron sources (triode structures) and colloidal solutions of silicon nanocrystals (quantum dots).
The carbon nanotube gated electron sources are the first commercially available electron sources based on carbon nanotubes, and have an integrated gate in order to modulate the electron emission characteristics, with voltages of approximately 400 volts. ANI currently supplies on a commercial basis diode mode (without gate) electron sources based on carbon nanotechnology for applications such as x-ray spectrometers for industrial applications and miniature x-ray tubes for medical applications. The new triode mode structures are beneficial in that they will extend the range of applications of cold cathodes carbon nanotubes, will lower the control voltages eventually to less than 100 volts and will extend the lifetime of the device.
Silicon nanocrystals (quantum dots) are the latest development in silicon-based materials (see press release of November 2, 2001). A physical effect called "quantum confinement," in which the silicon particles become smaller (in the range of 1 nanometer to 4 nanometers), enables the use of silicon to visible light optoelectronics. As a result, new markets for silicon can now extend to the imaging industry, biotechnology, visible nanoLEDs (light emitting diodes) and nanolasers. ANI is able to deliver today quantities of silicon nanocrystals in colloidal solutions at a price of $100/milligram.
Dr. Zvi Yaniv, the President and CEO of ANI, stated, "We are continuing to use our patent portfolio to expand on strategies to commercialize nanotechnology and materials which utilize nanotechnology."
