SI Diamond Technology Announces Hydrogen Nanosensor For Power Transformer Oils
Austin, Texas – June 17, 2003 – SI Diamond Technology, Inc. (OTC BB: SIDT) through its subsidiary, Applied Nanotech, Inc. (ANI) today announced the successful demonstration of a new palladium alloy sensor for the detection of hydrogen gas dissolved in power transformer oil. The absorption of hydrogen by the palladium alloy nanoparticles results in changes in the electrical and optical properties of the film that can be measured. The sensor has been tested for different hydrogen concentrations at different temperatures inn transformer oil. The hydrogen concentration varied from 20 PPM (parts per million) to 4000 PPM and the range of oil temperature varied from room temperature to 100 degrees Celsius.
The sensor exhibited good sensitivity and short reaction time. There is a strong connection between the "health" of a power transformer and concentration of hydrogen in the oil. The targeted application of this new sensor is continuous monitoring of electrical power systems and transformers, which will greatly reduce the cost associated with current maintenance methods and help avoid catastrophic failures.
"This is another example of our initiative to focus our proprietary nanotechnology on commercial applications that are immediately viable." said Dr. Zvi Yaniv, CEO of Applied Nanotech, Inc.
